Name of Power: Electromagnetic Radiation

Power description: Tobin can control and emanate the electromagnetic spectrum, meaning he can project anything from radio waves to gamma waves, plus everything in between. His basic level of power, which is the one he controls the best, is the visible light area of the spectrum. He uses this to project disguises and illusions, but the more complicated the disguise the more difficult to maintain. If pressed, Tobin’s energy level can increase allowing him to shoot off x-rays or even gamma rays. The downside to this part of his power is that he has very little control of this part of the spectrum, which can be dangerous for those around him. Emotions are what trigger his power, so if he becomes overly angry or sad he can emit harmful radiation. Sometimes, if Tobin’s mind is wandering too much, he will project his mind’s eye for others to see. He’s not quite sure how or why this happens, but it is something he has to deal with. Therefore, his appearance could change at will or at random. You never know. Tobin’s main weakness is that he can be used against himself. The radiation that Tobin emits can be reflected and redirected on himself. Therefore, he has to be careful where and how he uses his powers. Also, Tobin’s powers weaken him, so he needs to have a lot of energy if he is going to give off a major blast.

Appearance: Tobin normally has blonde hair that he keeps at a medium to medium-long length. If he cuts his hair too short, Tobin develops a cowlick in the front of his hairline which causes his hair to stick up. His eyes are a sea blue. He stands at about average height, a little more than six feet on a good day, and he compliments his height with a toned physique. He lied about his age and received a tattoo of a biohazard symbol on his upper-right pectoral. Right now, Tobin is trying to grow out some facial hair to give him a rugged, older look, but that beard isn’t really working out for him. The dominating feature on Tobin’s face is his angular nose, and when he smiles, he lights up the room.

Personality: Tobin tries as much as he can to be an individual, a solitary unit. He is independent, focused, and determined. Whenever Tobin sets a goal, he sticks to it. At his school, he does his best to be a leader. However, sometimes, he finds it difficult to work with others and doesn't like to take orders. Tobin can be self-centered, egotistical, and domineering. Still, Tobin likes to have friends and to be around people, like any normal high school student. To his friends, he is loyal, reliable, and loving. Tobin also adapts easily because he can take care of himself. If he has the time and space, he paints or sketches, basically any kind of art, showing his more sensitive side. If he can’t paint, Tobin has no problem just doing work. He loves working out in the yard, using the physical labor to distract himself. Others would say that Tobin is practical, reliable and down to earth, that he prefers logic and reason to flights of fancy. Tobin also likes to think that he is good at organization and getting things done, but he can also be predictable, stubborn, suspicious, overly practical and prone to angry outbursts, which doesn’t mix well with his mutation.


History: At the age of 17, Tobin has lost a lot of his family to illness. Most of them have died from cancer, and they died periodically through his life. First, it was his grandmother who used to babysit him, who died when he was twelve. Then, his father passed away from cancer when he was 14, and it wasn’t until he was 15 that Tobin realized that he was different than other kids his age. Growing up in a coastal southern California town, Tobin’s life was supposed to be focused around surfing and girls. Instead, he found himself emitting light while getting nervous about his driver’s test. Plastic items near him would melt whenever he was angry or frustrated. This pushed him to become more of a loner than he usually was. Eventually, Tobin decided it would be better for his mother and younger sister if he just took off. He was wandering the country when he was found by the X-men, and now he lives at the Academy, learning to control his abilities.

RP Sample: The rain fell hard as Tobin stepped out of his father’s old black Ford Mustang. Tobin and his father had worked on that car when his father had still been alive, and Tobin had worked on it alone in the years after his father’s death. That car was a piece of him, so when he left home, he couldn’t leave it behind. Walking through the rain, Tobin noticed that the only other vehicle at the rest stop was an 18-wheeled truck made his way into the facilities that the rest stop had to offer. Tobin was slowly driving out to the East Coast, but he still didn’t know why. Something was out there, waiting for him.

Stepping into the building, Tobin slicked the rain off of his leather jacket and headed to the restroom. So many thoughts flicked through his mind, thoughts about the family he had left behind and thoughts about his future. In the restroom, he accidentally collided with whom he guessed was the driver of the truck outside. “Watch where you’re going, dude?” he said absently and somewhat harshly. He couldn’t remember the last time he had interacted with another person. His interaction with people only caused them to get hurt, so he tried his best to stay away.

“’xcuse me, son?” replied the trucker in a heavy Louisiana accent. “I believe you best be watchin’ where you’re goin’!” The words caused Tobin to stop dead in his tracks. Who was this guy to talk to him that way? He didn’t need this from anyone right now. All he wanted was to be left alone.

“You’d listen to me if you knew what was good for ya…” Tobin replied while at urinal. “You don’t want to make me angry.” He shot the trucker a look as he hit the flusher and made his way to the sink to wash up.

“Well, you’ve already done that to me, boy,” the trucker replied. “So how about you apologize before things get messy.” Tobin could see the trucker in the mirror in front of him, and he watched as the older man pounded one fist into the other. Sighing, Tobin shook some of the water on his hands before turning to the trucker.

“Look, bro,” he replied, “just walk away or you will get hurt.” Tobin tried to stay calm, but he could feel the blood rushing through his body. He didn’t need this, not tonight. “Now, get away FROM ME!!!” The last words came out as a scream because as he spoke them the trucker lunged for Tobin. Being younger and more agile, Tobin ducked the punch, but the trucker didn’t escape harm’s way. As the fist passed by Tobin’s shoulder, Tobin could hear the sound of crackling skin, a sign that the trucker’s skin was frying. Tobin didn’t look back; he didn’t even check to see if the trucker was okay. Instead, he just ran out of the building and into the rain. Outside, he projected his anger and power into the open night sky, causing rain to sizzle as it fell to the ground. Why was this his lot in life? He didn't know, and that above all else made him angry.
